PALACIOS--Dr. James Chad Howard, 54, a member of the Palacios City Council, died Thursday at his Palacios home following a sudden illness.

Born July 16, 1926 in Kentucky, Dr. Howard was both a U. S. Air Force and Navy veteran of World War II who had been a physician in Palacios since 1962.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 4 p. m. in the First Baptist Church of Palacios with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating.

Burial will follow in Palacios Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Dr. Howard is survived by his wife, Mrs. Guadalupe Martino Howard of Palacios, and a son, Eddie Howard of Palacios.

Palacios physician and city councilman Dr. James Chad Howard, died Thursday of cardiac arrest in his home in Palacios at the age of 54.

Born July 16, 1926 at Artemus, Kentucky, Dr. Howard moved to Palacios in 1962 to open his medical practice. He was first appointed to the city council on June 20, 1977 and had been re-elected to that position for two consecutive terms. He also served as the city's health officer, co-chaired the council's Taxes, Budget and Finance Committee, co-chaired the Streets and Drainage Committee and was also a member of the Airport Committee.

Dr. Howard's body was found in his home on Craymer Street at approximately 3:30 p. m. after he had failed to show up at his medical clinic. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Jack Dooley. After an examination by Dr. E. B. Sanford, Dooley ruled the cause of death as cardiac arrest.

A graduate of the University of Louisville Medical School, Howard began his internship at Dayton, Ky. and later went to Oklahoma to practice medicine. An Air Force and Navy veteran of World War II, he moved to Palacios to continue his profession in 1962.

Dr. Howard was the son of Hugh A. and Chelesia Marcee Howard. Along with his wife, he was survived by his son, Eddie Howard of Palacios. Funeral services were held Sunday at the First Baptist Church with Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Cliff Elliott, Ed Schulze, Johnnie Heard, Hoot Gibson, Roger Wilson, and Roger Lovell. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. E. B. Sanford, Jack Maddox, Tommy Mangum, Charles Peterson, Kenneth Harvey, Don Hyett, Bruce Hart, Franklin Cunningham, Terry Oglesby, F. W. Wilson, David Anders and Jesse Alvarez.
