1916 - 2015
My mother was a kind and generous woman. She loved us with all her heart. She was a perfect example, as was my dad, of the "Greatest Generation". She worked hard all her life, asked for nothing, lived with integrity and cared tirelessly for her loved ones.
Mary Elizabeth was born in Fellows, California, on November 9, 1916, to Olaf and Pearl Loua. Her father transferred with the CCMO oil company and moved the family to Ventura where they bought a house on Warner Street. She was seven years old and Ventura is where she lived happily for the next 91 years.
Mom loved Ventura's mild climate and beautiful coastal scenery. In her later years, she spent many afternoons watching the action at Surfer's Point.
My mother began her business career at Montgomery Wards in downtown Ventura. She went on to work in accounting for the Edison Company, a job she loved and talked about all her life... perhaps it was because one of the customers that came in each month to pay his bill was my dad.
Dressed in his Ventura County Sheriff's Department uniform, how could she resist his invitation to go out? In 1954, Mom and Dad moved from Howard Street to build the first house on Estrella Street and lived there the rest of their lives. They enjoyed the friendships of many dear neighbors and their families. Mom and Dad were married for sixty years, until his passing in 2007 at 102 years of age.
Mom returned to work part time after the birth of her only daughter, Shirley. She worked in billing for Jan's Dress Shop and Rains Shoe Store on Main Street. She loved to meet friends for a soda or float at Woolworths lunch counter on her coffee break!
In 1963, the Broadway Department Store opened in Ventura and Mom was hired as the Head Cashier. She was soon promoted to Credit Manager and remained with Broadway until retiring in 1982 when her first and only grandson, Brad, was born.
She loved being home in retirement. She treasured her time with Brad and enjoyed her cozy home. She was an exceptional cook and loved fixing family and holiday meals.
My mother was raised in the Foursquare Church on Santa Clara Street and treasured the friendships her family made there. She loved her Lord and Savior! She lived a simple life of faith in God and devotion to family and friends. She was a life member of the Ventura Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and was active in Masonic and Jobs Daughter activities.
Mary is survived by her only child, Shirley Ann Hackleman, and her son-in-law Chris Hackleman, who considered it an honor and privilege to care for her. She also leaves behind grandson Brad Hackleman of Marina del Rey, 100-year-old sister Emma Carpenter of Pasadena and four nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Olaf and Pearl Loua, her sister Ella Clark, and her husband Howard E. Bowman. We extend our deepest gratitude to Mom's precious caregivers who became a part of our hearts forever.
A family graveside service was held on a perfect Ventura spring day, April 2, at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park. Arrangements were entrusted to Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura.
