Longtime Six Mile resident, John F. Griffin, passed away Saturday, April 11, after an active and happy life of 96 years.
He was born in Greenville, SC on October 21, 1918 to Reuben and Iler Campbell Griffin and had eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sisters, Ann Buchellon of Bristol, TN and Sara Timms of Easley; sister-in-law, Ernestine Sitton Parrish of Easley.
His wonderful marriage to Salena Parrish Griffin lasted 73 years, and they had four children. They are John (Marie) Griffin of Mount Pleasant, SC, Randy (Lynne) Griffin of Six Mile, SC, Jim (Jeanne) Griffin of North Charleston; and Laura (Bruce) Lindler of Cartersville, GA. They had thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Mr. Griffin finished Greenville public schools and attended Clemson University. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He was a devoted member of Pickens First Baptist Church.
In 2012, he was awarde the Order of the Silver Crescent, South Carolina's highest honor for volunteer and community service. In a letter from Governor Nikki Haley, she stated, "This award in recognition of your lifetime commitment to service to the people of South Carolina."
Mr. Griffin served as a trustee on the Pickens County School Board for the Daniel area from 1963-1972. He was instrumental in securing Six Mile's first fire department, as well as giving many volunteer hours in development of the Six Mile Water District. As a volunteer, he was a division chairman for the Pickens County United Way from 1986-1994. He served for 30 years on the Board of Directors of the Pickens County Savings and Loan (1977-2007). He was a partner in Stewart Lumber Company in Six Mile from 1959-1972. He was also Pickens County Clerk of Court from 1972 until his retirement in 1980.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30pm Tuesday at Pickens First Baptist Church and officiated by Dr. Fred Stone. Burial will follow in Old Stone Church Cemetery in Clemson.
The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall from 1:00-2:30pm, Tuesday, prior to the service.
The body will be placed in the church sanctuary at 1:00pm.
