Ellen Galland, 91, of Salix died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Chapel in Sloan, Iowa, with Rusty Hedger officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Ellen was born April 12, 1912, at Salix, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Regina (Hogh) Mogensen. She attended Salix High School.
In October of 1927, she married Miles Galland at Salix. They farmed west of Salix. The couple ran the Concession Boats and Bait at Brown's Lake from 1960 to 1963. Miles died Nov. 23, 1979. She lived on the farm west of Salix all her life until entering Pleasant View Care Center in 1994.
She attended the Community Methodist Church in Salix. Ellen took care of all the paperwork for Galland Subdivision. She made a scrapbook of the Salix area, and those interested in Salix history went to Ellen for information gleaned from newspaper clippings, etc. She loved to welcome guests to her home, and the coffeepot was always on. Ellen was always caring for a member of her family or a friend. She had a wonderful sense of humor and coped well with her blindness in the last years. Her hobbies were crocheting, gardening and canning.
Survivors include three children, Anna Marie Soulek and her husband, Robert, of Armour, S.D., Robert Galland and his wife, Marcia, of Arcadia, Calif., and Richard Galland of Salix; seven grandchildren, Ruth Ann Mack, Steve Galland, Jeff Galland, David Galland, Richard Galland Jr., Janet Galland and Devon Heilman; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Beauchene and her husband, Larry, of Sloan, Iowa.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and three brothers.
