The same spelling appears in his obituaries in the Rockford newspapers, Morning Star and Register-Republic, which appeared from March 22 through March 24, 1972. However, the World War II draft registration card and all census records have his name spelled as Nels.

Married Amalia Sjoblom in 1910; she died in 1947. Married Isabelle Newberg in 1948. Survived by his wife, Isabelle; seven daughters, June Carlson, Jane Selander, Ruth Slater, Betty King, Mae Hockmuth, Rose Todaro, and Esther Werkmeister; and two sons, John R. Ahlgren, and Carl A. Ahlgren. Predeceased by a daughter, Alfhild Enault in 1970.
