They came to America in October of 1853.
They crossed the Atlantic in a sail ship and were nine weeks on the ocean.
They stopped in Chicago, where Peter left his family and went to St. Louis, then New Orleans, then 60 miles below New Orleans to find work.
He returned in March and the family left Chicago for Moline.
After several years, they moved to Andover where Peter purchased 120 acres on the south half of section 30.
They made their home there until both were called away.
Thirteen children were born to them, four of whom died in childhood.
Eight of the children survived both parents:
Christine married N.V. Benson;
Joseph; Henry; Noah; Oscar;
Bernard; Ellen (Peterson) Frick;
and August.
