He served in the Air National Guard, studied at Fresno State, and majored in economics at Stanford University before practicing accounting in San Francisco, CA. It was there that he met his future bride, Canadian Helen Sikora. Richard and Helen returned to Sanger with their two young children to operate the farm in 1970.
In addition to growing plums and grapes, he also started a successful solo accounting practice, was secretary and treasurer of two local water districts, was a leader in the Sanger Lion's club, and served for over four decades as treasurer at Sanger First Presbyterian Church. Friends and family knew Richard as a steady man of integrity and wit. He relished opportunities to share his public speaking talents with others, and frequently emceed events at church, at Sanger High reunions, and other local gatherings. His Bob Newhart comedy routines were legendary, as was his passion for the San Francisco Giants and his distaste for all things Cal. Go Stanford! Richard was immensely proud of his family, which he loved and supported throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife Helen; daughter, Carol Scholl and her husband Rich of Saugus, CA; son, Theron Cosgrave and his wife Jill of Davis, CA; grandchildren, Matthew and Amanda Scholl, and Gavin and Travis Cosgrave; and brother, Robert Cosgrave and his wife Jane of The Dalles, OR.
A Memorial Service will be held at Sanger Community Church, 1610 Jensen Avenue, Sanger, CA, on Monday, April 13, 2015, at 11:00 a.m.
