J.W. "Johnny" Johnson, 72, of Hurricane, formerly of Nitro, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, in CAMC Memorial Hospital after a lengthy and courageous battle with diabetes. Born Aug. 19, 1935, in Sharon, he was a son of the late Lawrence Johnson and Anna Childers Johnson Davis. A 1953 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, he retired from PABCO Metals, Houston, Texas, formerly holding the office of vice president of sales with Vimasco Corp., Nitro, and was most recently a co-owner and vice president of American Industrial Insulation Inc. He was a longstanding member of the National Insulation Association and was on the board of directors of the Central States Insulation Association for many years. He was a former vice president of the Nitro Athletic Boosters and had served as a high school football and basketball referee and baseball umpire in West Virginia as well as an American Legion baseball coach. An avid boater, he held the title of admiral with the Great Kanawha River Navy. He was also a great supporter and fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers. Surviving: caregiver and wife of 49 years, Faye Johnson; daughter, Kathy Johnson of Cross Lanes; son and daughter-in-law, John W. II and Stacy Johnson of Nitro; grandchildren, Samantha and Trey Johnson of Nitro; sisters and their husbands, Lavena and Bill Hall of Dunbar, Lois and Frank Perry of Shrewsbury, Jenny and C. B. Hall of Belle and Kitty and Everett Sullivan of Dunbar; brother and his wife, Dwight and Donna Johnson of Charleston.
