James William Hopwood was the 7th child born to Sarah Avery and James Lawrence Hopwood. He had only two sisters besides himself who survived to adulthood. He was born in Chalvey, Buckinghamshire, which later became part of Berkshire.
  At the age of three, James' mother died. His father married Eliza Avery who was Sarah's older sister. James was 6 when they married.
  James immigrated to America about 1870. He married Jule Pendergast on 15 Nov 1876 in Cleveland and lived there the rest of his life. He worked as a butcher and a provisions dealer, this is exactly what his father did for a living. James Lawrence, was described as a master butcher and provisions dealer, who owned his own business.
  James and Jule had five children together, but only one survived to adulthood, Avery Hopwood. Avery became quite rich and famous as a playwright and author.
  James died on 5 Nov 1919 of stomach cancer.
