When Henry Thomas Clem first came to Adair County, Missouri in 1841, he had a mill on the Chariton River. Then, he moved his family near Illinois Bend Church and he donated the ground for the church and cemetery. He served as a County Judge for one year. They moved to Kirksville, Missouri in 1883 or 1885. (This information was given to the Adair County Historical Society in a letter from Viola (Linder) Turner whose husband Harold was a great grandson of Henry Thomas Clem.
