Stephen was one of the six children born to Aaron Brown Reeves (1804-1847) and Anna Cook Fitch (1802-1870), who married circa 1828, most-likely in Ohio where their children were born. His known siblings were Henry Brown (1829-1900), Alice Ann (b.1831), Mary B. (1836-1865), Albert L. (b.1841), Laura W. (b.1842), and Stephen E. (b.1844). I found his family on the 1850 Census, living in Warren, Trumbull, Ohio. Stephen's father Aaron had died three years earlier, and Henry's mother Anna, aged 48, was head of household. Henry was contributing to the family's welfare by working as a clerk somewhere.

The family appeared on the 1850 Census, living in Warren, Trumbull, Ohio. Stephen's father Aaron had died three years earlier at age 43. Stephen's mother, already a widow at age 45, appeared with the six children on that 1850 record. Son Henry, aged 21, was working as a clerk somewhere. Daughter Alice Ann was 19, Mary was 14, son Albert was 9, daughter Laura, aged 8, and Stephen was six years old that census year.

By the 1860 enumeration, the family had moved to Poland, Mahoning, Ohio. Stephen's brother Henry had married Esther Ann Doud on 12 Sep 1854, and they had had two daughters--Ella (b.1856) and Carrie (b.1858). Stephen, aged 16, his mother Anna, aged 57, and Stephen's siblings Mary, aged 24, Albert, aged 20, and Laura, aged 18, were all living with Henry and Esther's family. 40-year-old laborer Rush Chidester was boarding with the family as well. They must have had a big home.

Only Alice Ann was no longer with the family. I found a marriage record for her to Robert M. Merrill on 15 Oct 1850 in Warren, Trumbull Co., Ohio.

Sometime between 1860 and 1865, the family relocated to the Plymouth area.

Stephen married Alvira Malissa West on 5 May 1868 in Marshall Co., Indiana. They would bring six children into the world— Carrie (b.circa 1869), Laura G. (1871-1918), Leona (1875-1876), Emory West (1878-1958), Celia M. (b.circa 1881) and Annie C. (dates unknown), who died as an infant.

I found the family on the 1870 Census, living in Center Township, Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. Stephen, aged 26, was a retail grocer. Alvira, aged 28, was home with daughter Carrie, aged 1.

By the 1880 Census, the family had relocated to Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana. Stephen, aged 37, was working or running a grocery store. Alvira, aged 38, was busy at home with their three children—Carrie, aged 11, Laura, aged 9, and Emory, aged 1. Daughter Celia would join the family the following year.
Fast forward to the 1900 Census. The family had moved back to Plymouth buy then. Stephen, aged 58, was still earning a living as a grocer. Alvira, aged 58, reported that she had had six children, but that only four had survived to that census. Home with her were Carrie, aged 30 and working as a bank clerk, Laura, aged 29 and working as a saleslady in a grocery, Emory, aged 21 and a college student, and Celia, aged 19 and a music student.

Three years after that census, two of Stephen and Alvira’s children fledged. Son Emory spread his wings on 2 Mar 1903, marrying Ada Simmons Foote in St. Joseph Co., Indiana. A little over two months later, daughter Celia tied the knot with Clyde R. Beattie on 5 May 1903 in Marshall Co., Indiana.

The rest of the family was still living in Plymouth when the 1910 Census came around. Stephen, aged 66, was living off his own income. Alvira, aged 68, again reported that four of her six children were still living. At home with their parents were daughters Carrie, aged 40 and working as an assistant cashier at a bank, and daughter Laura, aged 41. Also there was 7-year-old Glennwood R. Beattie, identified as a grandson. Glenn was likely the son of Celia and husband Clyde Beattie. City directories for the city of South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana place Clyde and Celia in that city between 1905 and 1908, but it is unclear what became of them after that and why son Glenn was living with his grandparents.

That 1910 Census was enumerated on April 20th. Sadly, Stephen died later that same year at age 66, and was laid to rest next to daughters Annie and Leona.

Alvira appeared without him on the 1920 Census, widowed, aged 78, living at 810 S. Michigan St. in Plymouth. Still with her were daughter Carrie, aged 50 and still at her assistant cashier position at the bank. She gave divorced as her marital status, but she was back using her Reeves surname. I did find a marriage record for her to John W. Martin on 16, Jun 1914 in Marshall County. John was the son of James Martin and Ella Kleete. It appears their marriage did not endure. Also still with Alvira was grandson Glennwood, aged 16.

I lost track of Alvira after the 1920 Census and her stone is not next to Stephen’s here in Oak Hill.
