E. Brantley "Buck" Adcock passed away in his home surrounded by his wife and children on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the age of 79 after a courageous yearlong battle with cancer. Buck was born in his father's country store in the Wilbon Community of Southern Wake County. He was the third child of John C. Adcock and Clara M. Adcock. Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Patricia Powell Adcock; three children, Angela A. Lipscomb and husband David, Sharon D. Adcock, John B. Adcock and wife Cara Vallas; his sister, Joyce Adcock Vinci; four grandchildren, Jordan Lipscomb Riley and husband Garrett, Logan Alexandra Lipscomb, Jacob Brantley Adcock and Sofia Vallas Adcock and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Nell Adcock Caviness and his beloved brother in law, Angelo Salvatore Vinci ("Paul").
Buck grew up working in his father's country store, priming tobacco and farming other crops in and around the Wilbon Community. Buck loved the Wilbon Community and its residents. He was given the name "Buck" by workers on the railroad line that crossed the Wilbon Community and in which a depot was located. He spent many days as a young man on a locomotive between Wilbon and Varina Station. He attended and graduated from Fuquay Springs High School, and participated in football, basketball and baseball, with football being his favorite sport. After high school Buck attended Chowan College where he played football. At Chowan he was known as a head hunter on the football field, playing many positions with unmatched determination. His love of athletics stayed with him his entire life as he was a lifelong and committed fan of Fuquay-Varina High School athletics and all teams of the ACC, especially N.C. State. After leaving Chowan College, Buck was drafted in the United States Army and served our country as a military policeman at Fort Myers in Washington, D.C. After his service in the Army, Buck attended and graduated from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C. On September 18, 1960, Buck married his sweetheart also from the Wilbon Community, Patricia Powell.
Buck worked for a short period of time with Wake County Health Department as a health inspector. Then he began his career in the tobacco industry. Buck was a true industry Tobacconist, employing his expert knowledge of the different forms, scents, colors and textures in the cultivation, harvest and sales of tobacco. He enjoyed his time as a buyer for Lorillard, Thorpe and Greenville and Universal Tobacco Companies. He spent many years following sales as a buyer on the flue cured markets of North Carolina and Georgia, the burly markets in Kentucky and Ohio and the markets of southern Maryland. Buck spent many years during the markets' off season, working with the Wake County Farm Services Bureau measuring tobacco land. When farmers were not available to assist with measuring their tobacco fields, Buck employed his children to "pull the chain" across freshly ridged up fields. Buck's entire life was devoted to agribusiness in all of its forms. He knew every farm and field in Southern Wake County.
Buck was a devoted member of the Fuquay-Varina community. He served as President of the Fuquay-Varina little league, coached many youth sports teams, was a Free Mason of Fuquay Lodge #258 and a longtime member of the Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church. As a devoted member of Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church, Buck served as a deacon, greeter, usher and was a committed member of the Page Sunday School Class. His service to his Church gave Buck great joy, he dearly loved his Church.
The family would like to acknowledge and express their deep appreciation to all doctors, nurses and staff at Rex Cancer Center and the Transitions Life Care, particularly Melissa, Musa, Donna and Adam for their care of Buck.
