Viola June Armstrong Wood was born June 5, 1922, the youngest of three children from the union of Jessie Luella Doyle and Levi Leonard Armstrong. Viola was the granddaughter of two neighboring Long Valley pioneer families, Doyle and Ferris, and the step granddaughter to another pioneer family, the Robinson's.June, as she was commonly called, attended school a Long Valley and, in the seventh grade, took the janitor job. For five dollars a month, she walked to school and hour early and built the fire, swept the floors, cleaned the blackboards, dusted the furniture and cleaned the cloakroom.Married on June 6, 1938 to John Henry Wood, she was mother to eight children. With eight hardy appetites in the house, June went to work; first at local grocery stores and motels, taking in washing and ironing, and as school janitor at Long Valley, once more. A job she performed for thirty-five years, retiring in July of 1987.Widowed in April 1959, June continued to live and work in Doyle and support her children, insisting that each and every one obtain a high school diploma and any advanced education that may be possible.June has worn many hats in her local community. She served as officer in many organizations, including CSEA Representative, Mothers Club, 4-H, Civic League, Fire Department and Auxiliary, Chamber of Commerce, Little League, Park Committee, Doyle Historical Society, Lassen County Counsel on Aging, I.E.C., and was recognized in 2012 for serving 68 years as a poll worker in the state. An artist, June enjoyed all aspects of visual and manual art, and won many ribbons for her paintings at the Lassen County Fair, not to mention the signs, posters and crafts she has accomplished for the benefit of the Community.June was proceeded in death by her husband, John Henry Wood, brother Harry Armstrong, son , David Eugene Wood, one grandchild, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She is survived by her sister Jessie Mildred Bosenko, children Viola Smith, Rose Roberts, Beverly Houdyshell, Gloria (James) Day, John "Jackie" (Linda)Wood, Sharon McAllister, and Raymond (Diana) Wood as well as 21 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 23 great-great grandchildren.
