LOUISE M. (HANSON)
2 December 1917 ~ 15 January 2013

Louise M. (Hanson) Ballantine Whitcomb of Vancouver, WA, 95, passed away on Jan. 15, 2013. She was born Dec. 2, 1917 in Erskine, MN to Albin and Emma (Jensen) Hanson. She was the older sister of Marion, who died in 1982. In her sophomore year of high school she met Walter G. "Bus" Ballantine whom she later married.

Following high school, Louise attended a commercial art school, and secured employment as a commercial designer/artist, drawing women's fashions for newspaper publications during WWII. Her portfolio was extensive, selected parts of which have been framed in several vignettes for immediate family members in remembrance of her talent.

In 1944, she married Lt. Ballantine after he returned, wounded, from service in the Army during WW II. They moved to Vancouver, WA, to own and operate a Paint & Wallpaper store and soon after had a daughter, Leatha, in 1946 and son, Les, in 1947.

After Bus died in 1967, Louise worked in accounting for the City of Vancouver for seven years.

In 1974 she met and married Richard L. Whitcomb, an Army and Bonneville Power Administration retiree, who had a daughter, Jane, now deceased. During the 26 years of their marriage, they enjoyed traveling, gardening, collecting antiques, and each other's company until Richard's death in 2000.

Louise was a good wife and mate to her husbands, and a loving mother to her children and grandchildren.

Always the artist, she was particular in her dress and home decor, gift wrapping, sewing and food preparation. Louise made homemaking an art form. Her family will miss her drawings on gift cards.

Louise's family extends special gratitude to the caregivers at The Meadows Adult Family Home, who gave Louise love, care, and respect during the last 13 months of her life, and to Community Home Health and Hospice for their attention, support and kindness.

Louise is survived by her children, Leatha teHennepe and Les Ballantine; several grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

A Celebration of her Life will be held at a later date.
