Abel Erastus Kellam was the son of Severn Frederick Kellam and his wife, Martha "Patsy" Goffigon. He was married to Clara Octavia Eaton on October 8, 1889.

Princess Anne County, Virginia marriage records show the following -
"Married October 8, 1889 - Abel E. Kellam, widowed, and Clara O. Eaton, single - Abel E. Kellam, age 40, born in Northampton County, Virginia and residing in Princess Anne County, Virginia, occupation Deputy Clerk, son of Severn F. Kellam and his wife, Martha G. - Clara O. Eaton, age 19, born in and residing in Princess Anne County, Virginia, daughter of Moses J. Eaton and his wife, Sarah"
