She was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth [Fogerson] Whitaker. Her father and perhaps she were born in New Jersey, but by 1800 the family was just across the state line in Orange County, New York. Mary Whitaker was Sylvester Austin's first wife. After Mary died he married her sister Fanny.
