A SHYSTER IN LIMBO
Arrest of a Chicago Conductor, Army Officer and Aurora Oil Speculator---Vicissitudes of Accomplished Scoundrelism.
Acting on information from the Chief of Police at St. Louis, Detective L. G. Ryan arrested at the Stacey House, last night about eleven o’clock, Col. R. O. Selfridge, on charge of obtaining goods under false pretenses in that city in November last. From all that can be learned, this Selfridge is one of the most accomplished scoundrels traveling, and would have been locked up long ago had he met his deserts.
Not a great while ago, he absconded from Nashville with a power of attorney given by O. Collins of this city, to sell territorial rights for the patent Aurora oil, at the same time taking with him several bland deeds signed H. C. Dewitt, by O. Collins.
He is said to reside in Chicago, where he has a sign out as a builder and contractor. His wife, a woman hailing from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is believed to have deserted him. At one time during the war, he was on Gen. Pope’s staff in Milwaukee, and was afterwards on the staff of Gen. Gordon Granger as Inspector of the fourth army corps. One of his peculiar traits seems to be that of getting money and favors from ex-army officers on the strength of his former connection with the Federal forces. He had on his person when arrested a railroad pass signed by Gen. Innes, of the Northwestern road.
Previous to the arrest last night, he was last heard of as being in Milwaukee on the 30th of November, where he was turned out of a hotel in company with a woman occupying the same room with him.
The arrest was made quietly, and he was turned over by Detective Ryan to Sergeant Frame, of the Metropolitan Police, who committed him to the workhouse, where he will remain until further orders from St. Louis.
