William Clayton Hightower, son of Thomas Hightower, an influential southern farmer, was born in 1838, in Troup County, Ga. He moved with his parents to Clairborne Parish, La., at an early age; enlisted in the 2nd. Louisiana Regt., and was with Lee in Virginia, and with Stonewall Jackson in many historic engagements of the Civil War. He laid down his arms at Appomattox and returned home to remain a true, loyal citizen.
In 1881 he was marred to Miss Mai Cole of Way land, Texas, who was born in 1859 at Holly Springs, Miss. Mr. and Mrs. Hightower settled near Quanah in 1886; moved to San Angelo in 1888 and in June 1890, came to make their home near the north line of Hall County, on Oaks Creek. They took an active part in the development and progress of the country as long as they lived. They helped to build and support the old Union Hill Church and are buried there, together with their youngest child, Minnie Clara.
Other children are: Walter Thomas and Newton Aylmer of Memphis, Robert Cole of Dallas, Mrs. Willie Mai Reed of Lubbock, Charnell Armstrong of Brice, James Falconer of Henrietta Mrs. Fannie Belle Snyder of Wichita Falls and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Poole of Arlington.
