Robert E. Bird, Sr, age 91, of Culver, Indiana died early morning on Saturday, March 21, 2015 in St Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, Indiana.

Robert was born to Earl and Carrie Bird on October 15, 1923, in Du Quoin, Illinois. Upon her remarriage, he was reared by Carrie and Kenny Stevens, along with his two sisters, Loretta (Stevens) Butts of Marion, Illinois and the late Irma Jean (Stevens) of Kankakee, Illinois.

Robert joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in Giant City, Illinois at the age of 16 and soon followed with an enlistment in the US Army in 1940. He rose to be Staff Sergeant during his almost 5 years in Company G of the 10th Infantry, where he was a light machine gunner. During these years, he distinguished himself by earning the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart for bravery during battle in the European Theater.

Upon his discharge, in 1946, Robert married Lois Turner. They parented three children during their 28 year marriage: Betty (David) Munchenburg of Merrillville, IN; Robert (Paulette) Bird, Jr. of Charles Town, WV and the late Patricia Bird of La Porte, IN. In addition, Robert has 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

In 1981, Robert married Gladys (Beck-Hinson), who preceded him in death in 2006. From this marriage, he had two step-daughters: Theatus (Ted) Miller, and Juanita (Gene) Ponsler of Texas, as well as three step-grandchildren.

Friends may join Robert’s family in celebrating his determined commitment to life at the Odom Funeral Home, Culver, Indiana on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 from 11:00AM to 12:30PM. A spiritual service will be officiated by Pastor Bob Metzger at 12:30PM. Burial will follow immediately at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, Indiana.
