Atlanta/North Cohocton news

"At the home of Mrs. John Lander in this village, occurred last Thursday evening, the death of her mother, Mrs. Wesley Brownson, one of the oldest residents of northern Steuben…She was born in the neighboring town of Wayland February 14, 1821, and had recently celebrated her ninety-first birthday. Her maiden name was Cynthia Bennett and her parents were among the earliest settlers of this section. Early in life she was married to the late Wesley Brownson, then a young man of great energy and determination. Northern Steuben in those days was little less than an unbroken wilderness. The young couple bought a farm a short distance west of Loon Lake in the midst of an almost unbroken forest and there they made their home until Mr. Brownson’s death a few years ago. It was there that their four sons and four daughters were born and grew to manhood and womanhood.
Of the family who remains are Mrs. Lander of this place, the daughter mentioned, Mrs. J.B. Partridge of Wayland, and Mrs. L.B. Thrall of Avoca, who for four or five years has lived here and tenderly cared for the venerable woman till she passed to her eternal rest. She is also survived by one son, Chauncey Brownson of Lansing, Michigan, twenty grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the home of Mrs. Lander Sunday forenoon and the burial was in the cemetery at Loon Lake near where her most active years were spent. The services were conducted by the Rev. George W. Richmire of Pavillion, formerly the pastor of the North Cohocton Methodist church, who feelingly eulogized Mrs. Brownson’s Christian character, her devotion to and love for her large family and the upright and useful life she lived for nearly a century. The good woman was well known by the older residents throughout this section and for her many graces of heart and mind she was held by all who enjoyed her acquaintance in the highest esteem.
Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. John Wander of North Towanda, Leon J. Thrall, Avoca, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Partridge, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Smart and Harry Brownson, Wayland, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Drum, Loon Lake, Mrs. Peter Strobel and Mrs. Katherine Newman, Cohocton."
