Mr. Akins was born in Statesboro, GA and served in the United States Army and worked in Cochran, GA at Lithonia Lighting Company while also volunteering as a firefighter and a member of the Civil Defense in Statesboro. He loved music and photography. Mr. Akins was a member of the First Baptist Church of Statesboro and gave his heart to Jesus at a tent revival in 1942. He was also a member of Lawrence Drive Baptist Church in Macon since 1996. Mr. Akins was predeceased by his mother and father, Edna Woods Akins and Jake Akins; brother, James R. Akins; and a sister, Virginia Hall.
Mr. Akins is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gladys Leverette Akins of Milledgeville; sister, Ann (Cecil) Gay; niece, Edna Addison; and great niece, Edna (Scott) Calcarco, all of Statesboro.
