Reverend John Hartwell Harrison, passed away yesterday following a stroke of paralysis suffered last Saturday. He had been in declining health since May, 1907. He was in the 70th year of his age, having been born in January, 1839 at the "Wigwam" in Amelia County, Va.
He was the son of the late William H. and Mrs. Lucy Harrison.
At the outbreak fo the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army, being a sergeant in the Powhatan Troop which later became Company E, a part of the Fourth Virginia Regiment under Gen. J. E. B. Stuart. He served with distinction and was taken a prisoner by the Federal forces at Orange Courthouse, Va. He was carried to Washington, where he was confined in prison, but later paroled and exchanged. He immediately returned to the army, serving until the close of the struggle. He was shot in the shoulder at the battle of Spotsylvania, a wound which he carried until his dying hour. He surrendered at Appomattox, being allowed to return to his home. He went back to Amelia County, becoming manager of his fathers farm, and later bought his own farm.
He became interested in the ministry and gradually phased out of farming into becoming a preacher. On January 5th, 1870, Mr. Harrison married Miss Anna Mayo Carrington, of Sylvan Hill, Charlotte County, Va., who with the following children, survive him: Dr. I. Carrington Harrison of Clarksville, Va., Joseph Hobson, Miss Sarah E., Fred N., and Jas. D. Harrison, all of Danville, Va. He also leaves two brothers, Prof. Edmund Harrison of Hopkinsville, Ky. and Mr. James P. Harrison of Danville, and two sisters, Mrs. Charles J. Faulkner of Boydton, Va., and Mrs. Fannie H. Panten of Danville. His eldest sister, Mrs. Alice Wayles Harrison, the wife of Mr. Lewis Harvey Blair, of Richmond, died several years ago.
Funeral services will be conducted this (Thursday) afternoon from the First Baptist Church. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery.
