Louis Keith Elbert, 88, Newberg, died March 19, 2015, peacefully in his home.

He was born March 12, 1927, in Ottawa, Oklahoma, the son of Daniel Elbert Sr. and Vadis Scott. He spent most of his childhood on a farm in San Antonio, New Mexico, before being drafted in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II, during the German occupation, where he guarded Nazi war criminals for the Nuremberg Trials, and later guarded the Dachau Concentration Camp.

Upon his return home, his family moved to California, before eventually moving to Oregon in 1948. He married Ruth Ann Roeser on June 3, 1961 in Gervais, Oregon, and then settled in Rainier, Oregon. He worked at the Crown-Zellerbach mill for 31 years as a fork lift driver, before retiring in 1981.

Louie enjoyed spending time with his family, including yearly family vacations all around the West. He was very handy; he built two of the houses he lived in, and did all his own automotive work. He also enjoyed gardening, puzzles and games, and reading and watching Westerns. He was a life-long Catholic, always devoted to his faith. He was a kind and generous man, putting family first, which included helping to raise his youngest siblings. He touched the lives of all those around him, and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, children: Chris Elbert of Salem, Dianne and her husband John Krause of Longview, WA, Janice Elbert of Newberg, Carole Elbert of Newberg, and Steve Elbert and his wife Danielle Leppla of Aloha, grandchildren: Harley Krause, Cy Krause and Elora Elbert, and great-granddaughter Ramona Krause. He is also survived by two sisters: Leona Dixson of Blaine, TN, and Betty Nelson of Kittwanga, BC, brothers: William and his wife Del Elbert, Alvin Elbert, and James and his wife Elva Elbert, all of Rainier, and two sisters-in-law: Patricia Elbert and Rose Elbert.

He was preceded in death by his son, Patrick Elbert, his parents, and his brothers: Daniel Elbert Jr., Robert Elbert, and Clarence Elbert.
