Arthur “George” Coddington, 96, passed away at Cedar Hill Assisted Living, Accident, MD, on Sunday, May 2, 2010.

Born February 27, 1914, in Friendsville, MD, he was the son of the late Marcellus E. and Addie (Friend) Coddington. He was also preceded in death by his wife, of 61 years, Georgia Nichols Coddington, four brothers and four sisters.

George owned and operated the Coddington Cabinet Shop and was a union carpenter working on major projects in the county such as the building of Northern and Southern High Schools. George left the carpenter trade to become an insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance. He serviced Garrett County for 22 years. George and his wife, Georgia owned and operated the Coddington Nursery selling locally and wholesale to the Pittsburgh and Baltimore areas. George loved the outdoors, growing plants and flowers; he was an avid fisherman and hunter. George and Georgia enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S., Mexico, Caribbean Islands, Hawaiian Islands, Europe and North Africa.

Surviving is his there sons, Arthur George Coddington, Jr., McHenry, MD; Donald William Coddington, Lakeland, FL; Dr. Charles Eugene Coddington, Greenville, NC; two daughters, Mary Kathryn Youngblood, McHenry and Jo Ann Summers and husband, Terry, St. Mary's, GA. He is also survived by five grandsons, three granddaughters, six great-grandchildren, a brother, Robert Coddington, Johnson City, TN and a sister, Anna Marie Williams, Baltimore, MD.

Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 26722 Garrett Hwy., McHenry (Accident) on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Ben Lahay officiating. Interment will be in the Blooming Rose Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Hospice of Garrett County.
