An interesting story about Rebecca can be found in the book, Morgan's Raid Across Ohio by Lora Schmidt Cahill & David L. Mowery. Hines, had been captured at Bardstown, KY. He'd been forced to ride with the raiders. When they arrived in Adams's Co., Hines was taken to the Norval Osburn house, where he was held captive. Feigning illness, Hines was granted permission to go to the drugstore. He slipped through a gate in a board fence and moved to the back of Jerome DeBruin's home. Jerome directed Hines to his parents home. When Hines arrived at Jerome's parents home, Rebecca took him to the cellar. She removed several loose stones so he could crawl under the house. She sat calmly in her rocker while Confederates searched her home and the neighboring houses. The next day, Hobson arrived and issued Hines a pass to return to his home in Kentucky. The DeBruin home was used as a temporary headquarters. He and his staff spent several hours there, dining and scanning dispatches, before returning to the troops.
Please note the Biography of Hyman Israel DeBruin states Rebecca died the 25th of February in her seventieth year. Her stone states she died the 23rd of February. I am using the biography's date of death, the 25th. Biography's tend to be correct & I will NOT change this until further research is completed.
