Robert Peter Hairston, youngest child of George Henry and Estelle Gholson Hairston, Sr.. died Friday, March 13, 2015, at his home of 63 years on Riven Oak Farms near Silver City. Peter was born November 19, 1928, in Yazoo City, MS and grew up in Silver City. He graduated from Silver City High School in 1946 at age 16 as salutatorian.

Peter attended Mississippi State College, where he played baseball and football his freshman year and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. After graduating in agricultural economics in 1949 at age 20, Peter returned to his home and began farming with his father and brother in G. H. Hairston & Sons. On May 8, 1952, Peter married his beloved wife of 60 years, Lucille Fountain of Yazoo City. His son joined the farming business in 1980.

Mr. Hairston was active in his community and profession. He was President and Chairman of the Board of Midnight Gin from 1965 until his death. In 1984-85, Peter served as president of the Southern Ginners Association and the MS Ginners Association. The Delta Council recognized Mr. Hairston with achievement awards as Outstanding Producer of Soybeans in 1984-85 and for Outstanding Contributions for Cotton Ginning in 2000. He also served as a director of the American Soybean Association. In 1972, Peter was appointed to the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank and Trust Company and retired from the Board of Directors of Bank Plus in 2001 after 29 years of service. He was also a founder of Humphreys Academy.

Peter was a professed Christian and the Hairston family joined the First Presbyterian Church of Belzoni by transfer of letter in 1940. Mr. Hairston served as a Deacon and was elected a Ruling Elder in 1971, where he faithfully served until his death. Peter and Lucille were avid were avid tennis players for many years and enjoyed extensive travel for pleasure and professional agricultural meetings.

Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille in 2012; his brother George Henry Hairston Jr. (Frances), sister Jacqueline Hairston Mikell, infant sister Sarah Margaret Hairston, and nephew George Henry Hairston III.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol Hairston Hardison (Robert Cecil Jr.) of Ridgeland, MS and son Robert Ashley Hairston (Tish Holloway) of Silver City. Grandchildren are Robert Gray Hardison, Austin, TX; Dr. Aden Ashley Hardison, Denver, CO; Camille Ann Hairston, Silver City; Robert Andrew Hairston, Houston, TX; William Peter Hairston, Leland, MS; and Thomas Saunders Hairston, Silver City, MS. Other survivors are great grandchild James Ashley Hairston, three nieces and one nephew.

Pallbearers are Peter's grandsons, nephew Roland Hairston Mikell, and Frank Britton Prewitt III. Services conducted by Rev. Richard Wiman will be held at the Belzoni Cemetery at 3 pm Sunday, March 15, 2015 with visitation to follow at the First Presbyterian Church of Belzoni. Memorials may be made to the church or to a charity of choice.
