Former City Controller and Retired Merchant Succumbs at Mercy Hospital After Illness

John W. Becker, 81, of 100 East Northampton street, city, former Wilkes-Barre City controller and retired merchant, died Sunday afternoon in the Mercy Hospital, where he had been a patient since March 9 receiving medical treatment.
Mr. Becker was born in this city October 9, 1859, son of Jacob and Margaret Becker, who were among the early German settlers of this community. For many years, deceased was associated with his father in the grocery business under the firm name of Jacob Becker and Son, their store being located at Northampton street and Pennsylvania avenue.
Mr. Becker was a leading political figure in this city for many years, having served as city controller from 1911 to 1920. He was a communicant of St. Nicholas German Catholic Church, city, and was a member of the Holy Name Society of that congregation, and was also actively affiliated with St. Conrad's Society.
Surviving are four sisters, Sister Jacoby, stationed at the Holy Family convent, Danville; Veronica Becker, with whom he resided; Mrs. Josephine Barnwell and Mrs. William Poepperling, both of Wilkes-Barre.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 9 from the home. A solemn high mass of requiem will be offered at 9:30 in St. Nicholas' Church. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Darling street.
