John Henry was killed in action during WWI. He was aboard the HMS Eden which was sunk in a collision with the steamship "France" in the English Channel. Lost at night the Eden went down with the loss of her captain and half her crew.

He is remembered at the Chatham Naval Memorial Kent, England. Panel 15. John Henry Belsham, Able Seaman, J/23451 of the Royal Navy, died at sea, Saturday, June 17, 1916 aboard the H.M.S. Eden.

He is also remembered on the Memorial in his home town of Sudbury.
