Elias Bishop was born to William and Susannah (Hutton) Bishop February 22, 1830 in Washington County, Virginia. He married Sarah St Clair October 17, 1849 in Boone County, Indiana.

To Elias and Sarah were born four children; Francis, John W, Washington E (also known as William or Edward), and Celesta Alice. Sarah died in 1860 from typhoid fever. The family was living in Benton County, Iowa at that time.

On March 14, 1861, Elias married Amanda C King. Together they had five children; Elias Nelson, Perry E (also known as Peter or Pete), Rose, Stephen Oliver, and Maude Annabelle. The family returned to Boone County, Indiana and later settled in Sumner County, Kansas. Celesta died in 1890. Her only child Edna Mueller came to live with the Bishop family.

Elias is listed as being in the Kansas State Insane Asylum in the 1900 census. He died Decemeber 26, 1903. His second wife Amanda died in 1931, never having remarried.

Gravesite Details

Elias' headstone gives his year of death as 1904, but I have confirmed through newspaper accounts that he died in 1903.
