SHIRLEY MAY LIEN was born January 5, 1924 at Bucyrus, ND to Nels O. and Violet (Papke) Lien. She attended grade school at the Swanson School and high school in Lemmon, graduating with the Class of 1942. In the summer of 1942, she went to Iowa to work in a factory making bullets for the war. In the fall of 1942, she took a teachers test and passed it, then started teaching in the Spring Butte School where she taught for 3 years. For five years she worked at the J.C. Penney Co, and then back to teaching at Spring Butte, Orange, Gilstrap, Paranto, Darling Springs, Scotch Gap, McIntosh, Haynes, Dupree, and Bison schools.

Shirley graduated from Dickinson State College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She taught Sunday schools in the Lemmon Church of God for many years. She also taught Vacation Bible School and helped with the kids camps. In later years, Shirley cooked at the senior citizens center and took care of Amanda Larson for a few years.

For the past one and one-half years, Shirley has resided at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon. She passed away there on Saturday, May 20, 2006.

She is survived by her sister, Arliss (Henry) Craig, Fairfield, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents, 3 sisters, Norma Hadley, Lois Mock, Adel Lien; 2 brothers, Nolan and Merle Lien.
