Jesse was the son of James and Margaret Griffith Hanlin. He was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the middle child of ten children. The surname of Hanlin is commonly spelled both ways Hanlin or Hanlon. His death record and his death announcement both use Hanlon. Most of the other records for Jesse used the surname spelled Hanlin. His children were Hanlins.

Jesse married Mary Ann Huffman on February 12, 1860. This union was blessed with eleven children. Jesse and his family came to Tama County in 1870. Jesse died at his home in Butlerville at the age of 64. (FindAGrave does not have the location of Butlerville so I used Tama.) The funeral was held at his home.
