One of the most deplorable occurances in the history of this parish was the killing of young Chester B. Darrall by Joseph Royster. Monday night the two young men had an altercation at the store on Avoca plantation, the property of Darrall, just below Morgan City. Royster claims that Darrall, taking offence at some remark, drew his pistol and fired twice at him as he was backing toward the door. After the second shot Royster drew his pistol and fired at Darrall. The latter sprang through a window, and ran a few steps, then dropped dead.

The shooting was witnessed by a negro named Eli, who corroborated Royster's statement, but it is claimed by Darrall's friends that he has since made conflicting statements. Darrall's pistol was not found, and the statement is made that Darrall's friends hid it so as not to give color to Royster's plea of self defense.
