John Mechem III was born in 1798 at Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of John Mechem II and Sarah Evans. He accompanied his family to Belmont Co., Ohio before he was 12. On 11 Nov 1821 he married Abigail Moore, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Picklehamer) Moore. John and Abigail resided on farms in Belmont and Monroe counties except for 12 years they spent in IA and IL. Later they returned to Belmont County where John III died on 11 Nov 1858 in the 60th year of his life. John’s death in November occurred just weeks after that of his son Lewis J.. John was a Methodist. John III and Abigail had 7 children: Wilson E., Louisiana E. Belt, Edward Park, Rachael Anne Daughtery, Lewis J., Sarah Jane, and Naomi Weaver.
