Barbara J. Wonka, 89, of Grand Island died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at CHI St. Francis Medical Center, surrounded by her family.

To honor Barbara's wishes cremation has been chosen. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, in Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Karla Sheffy will officiate.

Burial will take place at a later date in the Blue Hill Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses, Don Wonka of Omaha, Diane Wonka of Grand Island, and Jodi and Gary Brockhoff of Lincoln; a grandson and his wife, Matthew and Brittany Brockhoff of Lincoln; along with many friends from the Regency Retirement Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Mary Armstrong and Marjorie Shaffer.

Barbara Jean Wonka was born May 25, 1925, in Blue Hill to Oliver and Jessie (Wellman) Martin.

She was raised and received her education in Blue Hill, graduating from Blue Hill High School in 1943. On July 15, 1951, she was united in marriage to Donald "Jack" Wonka in Red Cloud. Following their marriage they lived in Blue Hill until 1978, when they moved to Grand Island.

Barbara was employed as a bookkeeper for the Elgin National Watch Co. in Lincoln, by the Community Schools in Blue Hill as a clerk-typist, and at Doane Agricultural Services in Grand Island as a secretary.

Barbara was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. She was a 50-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Royal Neighbors. For more than 20 years she volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island, and was honored for her outstanding volunteer service to the hospital. She will be greatly missed for her caring spirit and love for her family.
