*1910 - Samuel Barn age 76 (Occupation Truck Farmer) living in District 956, Ridge Road, Chattanooga Valley, Walker Co. Ga. with wife; Lucy E., Hired man; Frank Higgins and wife Mollie Higgins. (Samuel Jr. and family are listed on the same page)

*1920 - Somwil Born age 85 (Occupation Farmer) Chattanooga Valley Road, Walker Co. Ga. with wife Lucy. (Son Samuel and family are listed on next page)

*1920 - Samuel Born dies Aug. 26, 1920 at his residence in Flintstone, Ga. according to obituary. But he has a Tennessee death record stating he died in St. Elmo, Tn. (He may have been carried to his step daughter Agnes's home in St. Elmo and pronounced dead by the doctor at that location.)

*Marriages: According to 1910 census, Samuel had been married 4 times. Only 3 have been verified. Multiple census and records report his last marriage was in 1880 to Lusia Emily (Lucy Newman) Bennett, widow of Patrick Bennett. No children came from Sam's marriage to Lucy. 1900 and 1910 census states Lucy as having only one child, that being Agnes Bennett. A news article states he and Lucy were both widowed at the time of their marriage. He was still married to Lucy at the time of his death in 1920. All other of his marriages would have been before 1880.

*Children: Multiple records and obits state he had 9 known children. In all census Samuel Jr. b.1876 states his mother is born in Tennessee but he never knew his mother. His death record states; Mother Unknown. His mother is the only one I can't verify but believe she is Elisabeth Ischi. Death record information is usually given by a relative or a third party and can be unreliable.

*Concerning Samuel Sr's 5th child Elise; In Samuel's obit and some of his children's obits, they claim Elise Borne Carlisle Ulbricht as his daughter and their sister. Her name varies but all state, she was living in Cuba. She is the wife of R.E. Ulbricht, both buried at Forrest Hills. Her marriage record, death record and obit state her parents were Carlisle. She does not appear in the 1870 Hamilton Co. Tn. census with the Carlisle's. Her findagrave memorial has her middle name as Borne. She was taken in by the Carlisle's as a child after the death of her mother. Several of Samuel's children did not always live with him.

*There were a fair amount of Born immigrants from Switzerland during the span of the early 1800's to the early 1900's. Most all of them settled in the northern states of New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio to name the most common. There was only one person from Switzerland in the entire 1880 Georgia census and that was Jacob Born b. 1839. He lived in Decatur near Atlanta with his large family. Many of them had similar names as the Tennessee Borns. Samuel and Frederick were the only ones in Tennessee and none were in Alabama in the same time frame. As told to me by my nephew, Eddie Born; The family story is, there were 3 Born brothers who came to the United States.

* I can't determine how Samuel Sr. and the Born family became involved with the Newman family of Blount Co. Al. The only thing I can imagine is Lucy and her 1st husband must have moved to Tennessee before his death or one of her relatives did. Lucy and Samuel are the first of several connections between these families.

*Samuel Sr. appeared to be very well known and respected in the Chattanooga area. Although born in Switzerland, his mother tongue was German. This is understandable since Switzerland is a small country nestled between Germany and France. As far as the family not being always together and their coming to the U.S. at different times, this is also understandable. Immigrants do what ever is necessary to accomplish their goal of living in the U.S., even if it means they can't all come at the same time because of the lack of money or other goals. Sometimes children are left with relatives or placed in other households for the purpose of apprenticeship. From the time Samuel Sr. left Switzerland to the time his last family member arrived, it took 18 years. When they did get here, they may not have always lived in the same household but did share a family bond. All who descended from these families should be thankful for their sacrifice. To me this was an amazing story and gave me a whole new appreciation for being born here. (Researched and written by Bobby and Judy Laney Liles for the Born Family)
