Theroux, Anne F. (Dittami), 103 of Brewster died peacefully at her home Saturday February 28, 2015, just five days before her 104th birthday.

She was the wife of the late Albert E. Theroux, who died in May 1995. They were married in West Medford in 1937. Their marriage was long, loving and exemplary.

Born in New York City, Anne lived most of her life in Medford. She was the eldest of the six children of Alexander and Angela (Calesa) Dittami, who emigrated from Ferrara and Piacenza, Italy, respectively, before 1900, and married at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in New York City in 1910.

After graduating from Lowell Normal School and attending Tufts College, Anne taught elementary school for many years at the Davenport School and at St. Francis of Assisi Parish School, both in Medford. She retired with her husband to West Dennis in 1978.

A Cape Cod resident for more than 35 years, Anne was a parishioner at Saint Pius X Church in South Yarmouth, and in recent years, was a happy and popular resident at the Epoch Assisted Living community in Brewster.

She was a voracious reader, and her talents included drawing, painting, wood-carving of birds, knitting, crossword puzzles and travel. In their early retirement, she and Al traveled widely to Europe, Egypt, the Caribbean, and the Holy Land.

An exceptionally optimistic, creative and outgoing woman, Anne was the mother of eight children, seven of whom survive her: Gene, long a Partner and Senior Counsel at the international law firm Baker & McKenzie LLP, and his wife, Polly of Lovettsville, VA and Sandwich; Alexander, an acclaimed novelist and poet, and former professor at Harvard, MIT and Yale, and his wife, Sarah of West Barnstable; Paul a best-selling and world-renowned author, and his wife, Sheila of Haleiwa, HI and East Sandwich; Ann Marie, an educator who teaches at the elementary school where her father was a pupil, and her husband, Peter of Stoneham; Mary, a gifted senior emergency room nurse at Mass General Hospital and who with her sister, Ann Marie were unfailing caregivers to their mother in recent years, and her husband, Jack of Wakefield; Joseph, an author, painter, and former high school principal in Hilo, Hawaii, and his wife, Diane of West Dennis; and Peter, a senior Government official, Arabist, and linguist who served at The White House as Director for Persian Gulf Affairs at the National Security Council, of Washington, DC; and a daughter born in 1949 who died in infancy. Anne is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; her younger sister, Marie of Reno, NV; and many nephews and nieces.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday March 7 in Saint Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday March 6 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

In Anne’s memory, read a story to a child.
