Mrs. Mary Bennett, age 76, of Blackshear, died Sunday morning (3/1/15) at her residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born August 20, 1938 in Charleston, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John Hilburn Cobb and Pauline Cobb Gunnels. She was raised in Savannah, GA but had lived in Blackshear for most of her adult life. She graduated from Surrency High School, and obtained her bachelor’s degree from Brewton Parker College. She retired as a teacher from the Pierce County Board of Education in 2001, having worked at Grady Street School and Blackshear Elementary. After retiring from teaching, she worked as a clerk with the Pierce County Magistrate Court.

She was a faithful member of Alabaha Free Will Baptist Church where she attended the Adult Sunday School Class.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Delano Bennett, Sr.; a son, Calvin “Cal” Bennett, Jr.; and her sister, Blanche Horne.

Survivors include 2 sons, Ashley Bennett (wife Sharon) of Mershon and Sheriff Ramsey Bennett (wife Charlene) of Blackshear; daughter-in-law, Donna Bennett of Patterson; 6 grandchildren, Jordan Bennett (fiancé Rachel) of Blackshear, Josh Bennett (fiancé Ronni) of Hoboken, Paige Bennett of Tifton, Cade Bennett of Carrolton, TX, Shawn King (wife Britney) of Blackshear, and Jennifer Dixon (husband Tim) of Patterson; 5 great grandchildren, Nate Turner of Blackshear, Levi Oglesby of Hoboken, and Shane, Allen, and Joseph Dixon, all of Patterson; and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will take place Thursday afternoon (3/5/15) at 3 PM in the chapel of Hart Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Alabaha Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southeast Cancer Unit, 401 Pendleton Street, Waycross, Georgia, 31501; Hospice Satilla, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, Georgia 31501; Alabaha Free Will Baptist Church, 4400 Hwy 203, Blackshear, Georgia 31516.
