It's not known where Marion was born but it was circa 1848. When he was about 12 years old and his brother, David, was about 10 years old their parents were attacked and killed by a small band of Indians somewhere in the Kentucky wilderness. With no close relatives the boys were separated and Marion ended up with a local preacher and his family. They eventually ended up around Annapolis, Missouri and Marion spent the next few years earning his keep at the hand of this very strict preacher.

When he thought he was old enough to take care of himself he set out on his own and ran away to Willisville, Illinois. He went to work for a man named Leonard Mathis who owned an underground coal mine. On November 29th 1870 he married Leonard's daughter Margaret Ann Mathis.

Parents to Margaret Ann are Leonard Mathis 1825-1892 and Serena Letsy Coleman 1827-1919. Margaret and Marion had 9 children.
