Clark Josiah Phillips was born at Watertown, N . Y., November 4, 1851, and passed away November 5, 1924. He was a son of David and Emily Phillips and came with his parents to Lake County, Illinois, in 1863. Here he married Etta Jane Triggs in November, 1879. They came to O'Brien County in 1881 and settled on a farm in Liberty township, where his wife died September 5, 1883. There was born of this marriage one son, Charles E. Phillips, now residing at St. Paul, Minnesota.

On March 7, 1886, Mr. Phillips was married to Mary Agnes Yeager and to this union there were born, Minnie Edna, Mabel Grace, Clarence David, Nellie Sophia, Viola Emily and Gladys Irene, all of whom survive except Nellie, who died April 27, 1908, and Gladys, who died October 11, 1909.
Besides his wife and surviving children there also remain two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Diamond of Libertyville, III., and Mrs. Sarah Kludge of Columbus, Nebr.

The deceased continued to reside on his farm in Liberty township until he removed from there to Sutherland In 1911.

Mr. Phillips was an active member of the Masonic and K of P. lodges. He was a pioneer in the county and by his untiring efforts acquired his home and property, and during the years of his residence in this county he has also acquired a wide circle of friends among whom his unwavering honesty and geniality is well known. He was a good neighbor, always willing to help in case of need or suffering, and was ever loyal to his friends.

For over a year he has suffered much from the illness that caused his death, and bore his suffering with the greatest patience and fortitude.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church at Sutherland at 2:30 o'clock last Friday afternoon. Rev. A J Quirin, the former pastor, delivered the sermon, at the close of which he paid a splendid tribute to Mr Phillips as his personal friend. Rev. Thos. Batho, the present pastor, also assisted in the service. Interment was made In Waterman cemetery. The Masonic service at the grave was conducted by Brother L. O. Lampman of Primghar.
