Deveryl Nelson (D.N.) Cecil, age 95, of Tuscola, departed this life on Tuesday, February 24, 2015.

D. N. was born on October 7, 1919 in Devol, Oklahoma to Cal Cecil and Faye Shannon Cecil.

He graduated from Littlefield High School in 1938 where he played baseball and lettered in track.

In June of 1938, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and on November 1, 1940 he went on to join the U.S. Army Air Corps and served until WWII ended in 1945. He earned his private pilot's license in 1942 and received his wings as a glider pilot in 1943.

D. N. married Alberta Mayfield on October 8, 1943 in Abilene while home on furlough.

After the war ended he returned to Abilene where he and Alberta made their home for 38 years before retiring to their 20 acre place near Tuscola, where he was residing at the time of his death.

D.N. and Alberta celebrated 71 years of marriage on October 8, 2014.

He was a member of the Tuscola Church of Christ.

Mr. Cecil's career was in the auto parts business.

Hobbies included baseball, gardening, and traveling the Unites States in their RV. As a Little League and Pony League umpire, he was a charter member of the Abilene Umpire Association.

Mr. Cecil is preceded in death by his parents, Cal and Faye Cecil; brothers, Lamoine Cecil, and Verneal Cecil; and son-in-law, Dee Travis, Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Alberta Mayfield Cecil of Tuscola; two sons, Jed B. Cecil of San Angelo, and Joel A. Cecil of Houston; one daughter, Jane Cecil Travis of Franklin, TN; two grandchildren, Melissa Travis Jerkins (Nathan) of Austin, and Dee Thomas Travis, Jr. (Lauren) of Nashville, TN; great-grandsons, Silas Lee Jerkins and Arthur Ian Travis; two brothers, Oreath Cecil and James Cecil (Wanda) of Hobbs, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 2 - 4p.m. at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St., Abilene. Funeral services will be 2:00p.m., Monday, March 2, 2015 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory St., with Dan Harkness and Dee Travis, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Mayfield family plot in Abilene Municipal Cemetery's Oddfellow section.
