Harlin Lee Smeltzer, 93, of Girty, South Bend Township, died Tuesday (Feb. 26, 2002) at his home.

Born Aug. 18, 1908, in South Bend Township, he lived in the area most of his life. For 16 years, he was a resident of Gardina, Calif.

He retired as foreman from American Standard, Torrence, Calif.

Mr. Smeltzer was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, South Bend Township, where he was a past Sunday school supervisor and served on the church board and numerous committees; member and former chaplain of Apollo Blue Masonic Lodge; Coudersport Consistory; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Odd Fellows of Indiana, Pa. since 1925; Elderton Senior Citizens; Burrell Township Golden Agers; Karns City Retirees; and chaplain and Seventh Degree member of Kaylor Grange.

A former manager of South Bend Mutual Fire Insurance and former school district board director and secretary, he was instrumental in the building of Elderton High School.

An avid traveler, he enjoyed trips to all of the 50 states.

Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Olive McElroy McCollough Smeltzer; two sons, Robert Smeltzer of Girty and Ray Smeltzer of Blairsville; two daughters, Velva Wingren of Leechburg and Mrs. Donna (Frank) McClain of Avon Park, Fla.; three stepsons, James K. McCollough of Butler, Gary R. McCollough of Allegheny Township and Dennis McCollough of Karns City; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Mary Joyce (William) Graham of Bruin, Mrs. Darlene (Ronald) Cousins of Eldred and Mrs. Phyllis (Ronald) Dodd of Karns City; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; 24 step-grandchildren; and 33 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lenora Frederick Smeltzer; his second wife, Clara Suman Smeltzer; a son, Ronald Lee Smeltzer; a daughter, Delores Alma Smeltzer; his parents, Melon and Eva Haney Smeltzer; and an infant sister, Sara Eva Smeltzer.

Friends are being welcomed from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at BAUER FUNERAL HOMES, CLARK CHAPEL, Elderton. Funeral ceremonies will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kevin Rea officiating. Burial will be in Elderton Cemetery, Armstrong County.
