Obituary -- Greenfield Recorder, Dec 30,2013:
CHARLEMONT - Lincoln H. Shaw, 88, U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, born May 31,1925 in Northampton, MA, peacefully entered Eternal Rest with family by his side on December 26,2013.
Linc attended the Crittenden school and Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls. He was drafted out of the 11th grade in high school into the U.S. Navy. His training included Basic Engineer school and the Henry Ford Naval School for Special Training in Dearborn, Michigan graduating as Fireman Third Class. He was stationed aboard the USS Blue Ridge as Engineer of the Staff boat. He was Staff Driver for the 7th Amphibious Force Commanding Officer and Vice Admiral Daniel E. Barbey. Aboard ship he was switchboard operator for the intercommunication system. His service awards include the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with 3 stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 stars. Linc was honorably discharged as Fireman First Class on February 22,1946.
Upon returning from his service, he worked with his parents, the late Captain Harry P. Shaw and Mary E. (Hilliard) Shaw, owners of "Shaw the Florist" in Shelburne Falls. Linc helped to raise carnations, his favorite being the white variety. Their motto was "Say it with flowers". On August 25,1946 Linc was married to Margaret L. Rogers, together for 66 years until she predeceased him on February 12,2013.
Linc was involved in many community activities over the years. He was a member of "The South River Four" a Conway Barbershop Quartet that sang in many local concerts and competitions, the Mohawk Chapter of the Family Camper Assoc., he built and drove many parade floats for the Fourth of July parades and the Buckland Bicentennial Parade, he was a train enthusiast and volunteered at the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum helping to restore Trolley #10 which took many months to complete, and he was a member of the Shelburne Falls V.F.W. Post 8503.
Most of his working years were spent at the former Kendall Mills in Colrain until he retired after 38 years of employment. Linc could also be found at the Mohawk Drive-In taking tickets and working in the concession stand. He was a long time member and former Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Colrain.
Linc and Margie enjoyed their vegetable and flower gardens and working around the house. His love of railroading and trains was evident by his dedication to the restoration of Trolley #10 and bringing it back to its former glory. Linc leaves behind his four children; Judith E. Eisley and her husband Norman D. Eisley, Jr. of Watsontown, PA; Jeffrey H. Shaw and his wife Ellen of Charlemont; Jennifer C. Bettis and her husband James Bettis of Milton, FL; Jonathan R. Shaw of Gill, MA; ten grandchildren, Joshua Shaw, Jessica Shaw, Norman D. Eisley III, Ericka C. Hartzel, Megan Shaw, Samantha Shaw, Clancy Shaw, Russell Bell, Jenny Bell, Robbie Bell; two great-grandsons Torin Bertolli and Trent Bell, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Virginia Binder and Marilyn Buzzanco.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 4, at the First Baptist Church of Colrain at 1 p.m. Burial services will be private. There are no calling hours.
