The son of John and Mary Davis Humphreys. When young he spent time in Cuba, California, and Nicaragua. He returned to Jefferson County in 1853 and married Mary Ellen Cameron in 1858. In 1861 he enlisted as a private with the Second Regiment of Virginia Infantry. Reenlisting with the Seventh Virginia Cavalry, he resigned when he began to greatly suffer from tuberculosis. He again enlisted with the cavalry in 1863. He was wounded several times, being shot thrice at close range in one conflict. He was being carried across the Rappahannock, assumed dead, when the water splashing his face revived him. He was promoted to Captain in 1864 and assigned to the Invalid Corps in 1865 while promoted again.
