Son of Thomas D. and Elizabeth Hill Castevens. Charles married (1) Margery Duckworth, and (2) Mary Ring.
MAXTON - Charles Montgomery Castevens, 74, former mayor of Maxton, prominent businessman and churchman, died suddenly Saturday afternoon of a coronary attack. He had served as Justice of the Peace since his retirement and had worked as usual that morning in the police station. He became ill about 2 p.m. and was rushed by ambulance to the Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg but was dead upon arrival.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in St. Paul's Methodist Church at 4 o'clock. His pastor, the Rev. Robert Drew, officiated, and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, where he was buried with full Masonic honors.
Mr. Castevens was born in Elkins, but spent the greater part of his life in Albemarle, where he operated a drug store. He and his family moved to Maxton about 1942, and he was owner and operator of the Maxton Drug Store. He served as mayor for 2 years in 1946 and 1947. He has lived in Maxton since then except for a few years when he operated a drug store in Laurel Hill. He served overseas during WWI and was a member of the American Legion.
He was twice married. His first wife, who died 10 years ago, was the former Miss Marjorie Duckworth of Morganton. About five years ago he was married to Mrs. Mary Rogers of Maxton, by whom he is survived. He is also survived by two sons, Charles M. Castevens Jr. of Greenville and Jack Castevens of Charlotte; a stepson, David Rogers of Florence, SC; and 4 grandchildren.
