The sixth child of thirteen children born to Josiah and Margaret Sophrania Cannon Marchbanks.
Josiah died 12 Feb. 1850 as the family was preparing to move to Texas. After his death Margaret and the family completed the sale of their lands and set out for Texas. The party consisted of about 10 of Margaret's 12 sons and their families and her widowed daughter, Elinor Fowler and her children. The majority of this group settled in Ellis and Johnson Counties of Texas.
James put down permanent roots in Hopkins County. He married Nancy Ritchie 5 Oct. 1853. James lived the rest of his life in Hopkins County. He served briefly as the first postmaster of Gold Hill from 15 Jan. 1855 until 15 Aug. 1855.
His probate records indicate that he died about the middle of 1874 and is possibly buried at Gafford Chapel Cemetery in Hopkins County.
He and Nancy were the parents of at least 6 children.
