HARLAND, REGINALD WICKHAM, Captain, 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment, 7th son of the Rev. Albert Augustus Harland, Vicar of Harefield, Uxbridge, by his wife, Louisa Ellen, daughter of Henry Wilson; born Harefield Vicarage, co. Middlesex; educated Temple Grove, East Sheen, Wellington College, and Royal Military College, Sandhurst; gazetted 2nd Lieutenant Hampshire Regiment, 22 April, 1903, and promoted Lieutenant 22 Dec. 1905, and Captain 9 Aug. 1911; went to France, 20 Aug. 1914, and was killed in action at Ploegsteert, 30 Oct. following; unmarried. Buried in the churchyard there. A brother officer wrote: "It was a day of very hard fighting, in spite of very heavy fire he continued to watch with his field glasses the movements of the enemy in order to direct the fire of his men, when a bullet struck him in the head." Captain Harland won Lord Roberts' Prize at Sandhurst as winner of the competition at drill.
