Gary was born in Somerville, New Jersey, the son of the late Charles H. and Helen (McConnell) Deckhut on May 27, 1939.
He lived in Annandale, New Jersey before moving to Califon in 1969.
Gary was a graduate of North Hunterdon Regional High School class of 1957 and the Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia in 1959 and has been a Funeral Director since 1964 and the owner of the Coughlin Funeral Home in Califon since 1970.
He was a member of the Califon United Methodist Church for 45 years and a committee member of the Top O’ th’ Barn Thrift Shop, an associate member of the Hunterdon Hills Lions Club in Clinton, New Jersey and served on the Califon Board of Education from 1984 until 1990.
Gary was a member of the New Jersey and National Funeral Directors Association and past president of Tri-County Funeral Directors Association and served on the Board of Advisors of the Mercer County Community College Mortuary Science Department from 1975 until 1978.
Gary is survived by his wife Edna L. (Tornes) Deckhut and a daughter Krista J. Deckhut of Califon, a brother Zane Deckhut and his wife Sandy of Northhampton, Pennsylvania and two nieces Julianne and Christina Deckhut.
In addition to his parents, Gary was predeceased by his brother, James M. Deckhut.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday February 24, 2015 at 11:00AM in the Califon United Methodist Church, 15 River Road Califon, New Jersey 07830.
Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Cokesbury, New Jersey. Calling hours will be on Monday from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 6:00PM to 8:00PM in the Coughlin Funeral Home, 15 Academy Street, Califon, NJ.
