Marrietta Elizabeth Brown Koch of Akron, Colorado passed away February 12, 2015 at the Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan, Colorado. She was born on October 8, 1925 the youngest child of Walter and Alice Hobbs Brown in the DeNova community of Washington County. Having attended country school she graduated from High Prairie School in 1944. Marrietta was active in school with basketball, and also enjoyed roller skating and dancing. She looked forward to attending the High Prairie alumni reunions. Marrietta married Fred E Koch Jr on August 26, 1946 in Saint Francis, Kansas. They enjoyed farming and ranching at the Koch homestead northeast of Akron where they raised their four children, Duane, Karen, Lynnetta and Delbert.
Planting a large garden, raising chickens for the freezer, looking forward to wheat harvest and the opportunity to drive the combine were some of her highlights.
Marrietta served the community by being a Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school teacher, a 4-H leader as well as being a member of the Jolly Good Neighbors Home Demonstration Club. She also enjoyed the women’s bowling league, was a member of the Book Chatter Club, the Women’s Auxiliary of the VFW; and a longtime member of the Washington County Fair Board, being honored as an Eastern Colorado Round-up Grand Marshal.
Marrietta started working away from the home in the fall of 1962. She was employed at the Schafer Drug Store, the Citizens National Bank, the Washington County Clerk and Recorder office and the Central Great Plains Research Station.
In her free time Marrietta expressed her creativity through many mediums including oil painting, wheat weaving, crocheting, cross stitching, ceramics, pottery, and silk flowers.
Marrietta was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Alice Brown, her husband, Fred, her brothers Cecil, Peurlie and Harry Brown, her sisters Velma Ross, Beulah Benish, Lulu Snyder and Lucile Brown.
She is survived by her children Duane (Julie) Koch of Wray, Karen (John) Kissel of Penrose, Lynnetta (Ron) Wunsch of Lafayette, Indiana, and Delbert (Jeaninne) Koch of Akron. Her grandchildren Mike (Renee) Koch of Akron, Joe (Kayla) Kissel of Jasper, Arkansas, Boni (Brett) Beckwith of Aurora, Dude (Rynea) Kissel of Genoa, Becky (Aaron) Hershey of Lafayette, Indiana, Bill Wunsch of Chicago Illinois, Ryan (Jennifer)Koch, and Lauren Koch of Akron, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandsons.
Memorial donations in her name may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Otis or the Washington County Nursing Home.
The Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Otis, Colorado with CRE, Randall Feather officiating. A Private Family Inurnment was held later that afternoon at the Akron Cemetery in Akron, Colorado. Baucke Funeral Home directed the service.
