Alva C. Garrision, age 21, was mustered into Co K, 123rd IL Inf on 6 Sep 1862 in Mattoon, IL and was enrolled at Salisbury, IL on 13 Aug 1862 for 3 yrs as a sergeant. He was mustered out on 28 Jun 1865 in Nashville, TN as a Sgt.
The 123rd Illinois Infantry Regiment was a part of "Wilder's Lightning Brigade." The famous ‘Lightning Brigade,’ as Wilder’s regiments collectively were known, was one of the Civil War’s most unusual and successful fighting conglomerations becoming the first mounted infantry brigade in the Union Army. They were armed with Spencer 7-shot repeating rifles that each man purchased himself.
