FIREMAN LOSES LIFE, PIPE BURSTS.
John Brandt, fireman at the Alamito Dairy company, was scaled to death when a steam pipe burst in the boiler room of the company's plant, 2601 Leavenworth street, late Friday afternoon.
The cause of the explosion is not known. The boilers were tested within the last week and declared in good condition, according to the company. The bursting pipe blew the hot water to all corners of the room, and came down in a scalding shower on Brandt. Death was almost instantaneous.
H. G. Schwater, 2421 Poppleton avenue, Frank M. Wavra, stationary engineer at the plant, and General Manager F. L. Kernan were in the next room at the time of the explosion, and hastened to the stricken man's assistance. Police Surgeon James O'Connors was summoned, but Brandt was dead when he arrived.
Brandt is survived by a wife and two small children, who reside at 4523 Brown street. He was about 45 years of age.

WAS KILLED IN OMAHA FRIDAY
From Saturday's Daily -- A telephone message last evening telling of the death of John Brandt of Omaha, who is a son-in-law of J. B. Higley of this city, and husband of the former Miss Violet Higley, of this city. Mr. Brandt was employed in the Alamito Creamery and was engaged in thawing out a frozenwater pipe, which the extreme cold had frozen, when the pipe burst and killed him. At the time of the the report came it was not clear as to where portions of the exploded pipe did the work, or whether he was killed by the steam escaping from the superheated pipe. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Higley departed on the first train this morning for Omaha to render what assistance they could in this hour of their daughter's grief and trouble. Nothing is known as to when the funeral will be as yet.
